Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) alumni Jitendra Mohan and Swapna Samant have donated $11 million to their alma mater, marking one of the largest alumni contributions in the institute's history.

The donation will support STEM education, semiconductor research, and infrastructure development, furthering the institution’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence, an official statement noted.

The couple, who graduated in the 1990s—Mohan in electrical engineering and Samant in civil engineering —have specifically pledged funds for the Vidya Sharma Chair Professorship in Electrical Engineering,  which is dedicated to advancing women faculty in STEM.

IIT-B highlighted that the donation would be instrumental in bolstering the institute’s leadership in semiconductor technology, an area where Mohan, CEO and co-founder of Astera Labs, has achieved success. Additionally, the donation will contribute to the redevelopment of Hostel 9 on campus.

“This initiative reflects the donors’ steadfast commitment to gender inclusivity in academia and their aspiration to foster an environment where women scientists and researchers can thrive,” IIT Bombay stated.

Reflecting on their motivations, Mohan and Samant shared, “At IITB, we made amazing lifelong friends—many of whom are an integral part of our lives to this day. We are grateful for all that we got from IITB and are honoured to give back and contribute towards academic opportunities and student well-being.”

IIT Bombay director, Shireesh Kedare, expressed gratitude, calling it an “unparalleled act of generosity” that strengthens the institute’s position as a leader in innovation and inclusivity. The donation was announced during the recent IIT-B San Francisco Bay Area alumni meet, which was attended by over 175 alumni.
