America First Legal (AFL) has officially backed Harmeet Dhillon’s nomination for Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, and submitted a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb. 27.

During her Senate confirmation hearing on Feb. 26, Dhillon, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the post, emphasized that her Sikh faith and immigrant background shaped her legal career.

"My faith teaches me that it is a duty to stand up for the rights of the defenseless," she told the Senate Judiciary Committee, pointing to her decades of work advocating for vulnerable communities.

The AFL letter underscored Dhillon’s commitment to defending the rights of all Americans, citing her advocacy for religious liberty, parents’ rights, and her unwavering support for individuals' freedom from government overreach.

"Dhillon is extremely well qualified for this position. After graduating from Dartmouth College, she earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law, where she served on the Editorial Board of the University of Virginia Law Review. Following law school, she clerked for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Baltimore, Maryland," mentioned the letter.

In the letter, it was further mentioned, "She has shown she will defend the rights of all American citizens. She has advocated for religious liberty, parents’ rights, and, despite immense political pressure, Americans’ right to be free from overreaching government mandates. Notably, she represented independent contractors, both Republicans and Democrats, who didn’t qualify for PPP loans during the pandemic. These barbers and beauticians were left to starve—prohibited by government officials in Sacramento from earning a living."

"Dhillon has more than three decades of litigation and legal practice management experience." Citing all these reasons, the letter stated, “This is why America First Legal believes Harmeet Dhillon would be the perfect choice to lead this historic office.”

The Civil Rights Division (CRT) of the Department of Justice is responsible for protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans and enforcing federal statutes that prohibit discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin. While the nation has made significant progress in advancing the promise of color-blind equality, AFL emphasized that the fight is far from over.

AFL is a national nonprofit organization that supports the rule of law in the U.S., works to prevent government overreach, and educates the public to promote civil rights, due process, and equal protection for all Americans.

The AFL support comes at the same time when civil rights organizations, including the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, have called on the Senate to reject Dhillon’s nomination for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. They criticize her record on voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and civil rights enforcement.
