The Ram Rath Yatra, an initiative spearheaded by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) of America and its counterpart in Canada, VHP Canada, commenced on Mar.25 in Canada two days after the American yatra started with active participation from the Hindu diaspora community in both countries.
The journey which spans 60 days will include temple visits¬––50 in the US and 150 in Canada. Its aim is to unite the various religious sites in the respective countries connecting Hindus with their spiritual roots and each other.
On Mar. 25 the American segment included visits to a temple in Indiana-South Bend, seven temples in Michigan, and the Durga Temple in Bowling Green, Ohio. Concurrently, the Canadian team began their Yatra with significant events at the Vishnu Temple in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
The start of the Canadian journey was marked by the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony, of three revered deities, imbuing the pilgrimage with divine blessings. This was followed by a special Puja dedicated to the Rath (chariot) itself, invoking divine protection and success for the yatra across Canadian soil.
A key aspect of the Canadian celebration was the performance of a Havan, a ritual offering to the fire deity Agni, symbolizing the collective hopes and prayers of the community for the safety and success of the yatra.
Additionally, civic leaders and cultural associations extended their well wishes for the Canadian journey. Mayors from Richmond Hill and Markham, along with leaders from the Hakka Canadian Association and the Yin Hua Association, like Joe Samion and Chris Chung participated in the event highlighting the pilgrimage's impact on uniting various communities.
“This event, transcending mere religious procession, emerges as a vibrant symbol of unity, faith, and cultural heritage, The journey of the Ram Rath, or chariot, serves as a vehicle for spiritual enrichment, community engagement, and the promotion of a shared cultural legacy among Hindus living far from their ancestral homeland,” a statement by the organizers said.
“This pilgrimage is a testament to the resilience of the Hindu community, its significant contributions to the rich tapestry of North American society, and its commitment to principles of peace and mutual respect. By fostering a sense of belonging and community among the diaspora, the yatra strengthens the bonds within the Hindu community and serves as a beacon of cultural understanding and appreciation among the diverse populations of North America, “ the statement added.
