The U.S. Consulate General in Chennai and the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) of Kerala inaugurated an “American Corner” at the CUSAT campus last week to foster cultural and educational exchanges with the people of the state.

The American Corner at CUSAT joins a global network of nearly 600 American Spaces, which serve as U.S. government cultural and information centers offering free, open access to resources about the United States. It is the third such facility in the country and the first in the state.

Jeanne Briganti, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai, inaugurated the facility alongside CUSAT vice chancellor M.J. Bushiri and Rajan Varughese, member secretary of the Kerala State Higher Education Council.

“The American Center Chennai, which will directly support the new American Corner, shares with CUSAT a commitment to empower girls and women in STEAM, promote hands-on-learning opportunities and STEAM for social good, improve access to science, and cultivate the next generation of change makers,” Briganti said.

The agreement for the center was signed by US Consul General Christopher W. Hodges and CUSAT faculty V. Meera, during a visit by the US Education Trade Delegation, comprising 18 US universities, to the university earlier this year. Vice chancellor of the university Dr. P.G. Sankaran was present on the occasion.

The corner’s inaugural activities include a Robotics and 3D Printing workshop at CUSAT’s Centre for Science in Society, a business communication workshop with the Kerala Startup Mission, and eLibraryUSA training for research scholars.

Future programs will feature an AI and Machine Learning workshop in partnership with IIT Madras, EducationUSA sessions, and U.S. Fulbright Program consultations.

Located at CUSAT’s Students’ Amenity Center, the American Corner is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (local time), excluding second Saturdays and public holidays.
