An American influencer residing in Delhi shared the ordeals she faced while adhering  to Indian dinner party norms sparking online debate on cultural differences.

In the widely-viewed Instagram video, Kristen Fischer revealed that adapting to India’s unique approach to dining at social gatherings has been her "hardest cultural adjustment" since moving to the country in 2021.

“In America, the conversation happens after the meal, but in India, it’s before,” Fischer explained, highlighting the stark contrast between the two cultures. She recounted her surprise at Indian guests arriving late and engaging in lengthy socializing before meals are served. “I am always sitting there hungry and wondering when food will be served every time,” she admitted.

The influencer described an incident where she left a dinner party at 11 p.m., only to learn that the meal was yet to be served. “They were asking why I was leaving so early, and I was thinking it’s late, and I need to go to bed,” she said.

Fischer also confessed to returning home from such events and making herself a sandwich before going to sleep. Living in Delhi with her family, Fischer has embraced many aspects of Indian culture but finds this tradition perplexing.

“Wouldn’t the food get cold? Or I’d have to be in the kitchen making it the whole time instead of enjoying my guests,” she questioned.

Fischer’s candid reflections resonated with many, drawing a mixed response from social media users. “Welcome to India! It’s all about the social vibes first,” one commenter noted. Another wrote, “The food is the grand finale, not the opening act.”

Some sympathized with Fischer’s experiences. “I’ve been in India for years and still sneak snacks before dinner parties,” one user shared. Another humorously suggested, “Pro tip: Eat before you go!”

Known for her tagline “Just an American mama enjoying raising her kids in Delhi,” Fischer has embraced India’s vibrant energy, making it her home for over two years. Her social media offers a window into her family’s journey in India, including adopting a vegetarian diet, using public transport, exploring Indian cuisine, and sending her children to private schools. She frequently documents her experiences of learning Hindi, participating in local festivals, and wearing traditional Indian clothes.
