American Osteopathic Association recognizes Indian-American couple with presidential citation

Their pioneering work has championed the integration of holistic and patient-centered approaches in medical practice, resulting in improved patient outcomes and a greater emphasis on preventive care.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has honored Indian-American doctors and philanthropists Kiran C. Patel and his wife, Pallavi Patel, with the Presidential Citation, acknowledging their significant contributions to the osteopathic medical profession and their commitment to improving healthcare.

One of the highest honors presented by the association, the AOA Presidential Citation, honors individuals who demonstrate exemplary leadership, dedication to advancing osteopathic medicine, and a profound impact on patient care and medical education.

"Dr's Patel are leaders of the Osteopathic profession by supporting education, research and philanthropy. Their efforts have allowed many Osteopathic medical students to reach their goals and help alleviate health care shortages in America. We are grateful having such a wonderful family partnering with us. "said AOA president Dr. Ira P. Monka.

Kiran expressed his gratitude, stating, " This is a prestigious award that I am accepting on behalf of a community of champions for the Osteopathic profession. It is a testament to the collective efforts of many dedicated professionals and the support of the osteopathic community.” 

The Patels founded the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) to establish and support educational programs that cultivate the next generation of compassionate and skilled osteopathic physicians.

Kiran and Pallavi Patel, both trained at Columbia University, started a successful medical practice management company in Tampa in 1982, expanding into 14 practices. They founded WellCare, which became Florida's largest Medicaid HMO and later transformed into the WellCare Management Group with over $1 billion in revenue. In 2003, they sold their business interests to focus on global philanthropic efforts in health, education, and culture.

Kiran Patel studied medicine at Gujarat University and completed his residency and fellowship in the U.S.He currently chairs Visionary Medical Systems and is active in philanthropic efforts through the Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel Family Foundation, aiding communities affected by disasters in India and Puerto Rico. 

The AOA represents more than 151,000 osteopathic physicians and medical students, promoting public health, encouraging scientific research, and advancing the distinctive philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine. The AOA supports its members through various initiatives, including advocacy, continuing education, and professional development opportunities.
