Prominent Indian-origin literary figures, Amitav Ghosh and Jhumpa Lahiri, were recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the oldest learned societies in the United States.

Novelist Ghosh is renowned for his  exploration of culture, power and politics in his works. His novels intricately navigate the complexities of Southeast Asia, and have garnered widespread recognition, including the prestigious Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary prize, in 2018 and most recently the Erasmus award.

British American bilingual writer, translator, and critic,  Lahiri's narratives, reflect the experiences of Bengali immigrants in the United States. Her talent extends beyond English to Italian literature, where she has authored works of fiction and non-fiction, showcasing her linguistic prowess.

The induction of Ghosh and Lahiri into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences underscores their profound impact on the global literary landscape. The academy has also recognized Indian-origin individuals in the fields of mathematical and physical sciences as well as biological sciences.

Established in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences honors excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavor to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and work together “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”
