The Amritsar (Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee) International Airport has set a new benchmark, recording its highest-ever passenger footfall in December 2024 and the busiest year in its history.
Sameep Singh Gumtala, global convener of the FlyAmritsar Initiative, a global advocacy campaign for direct flights and development of the airport, revealed that it welcomed 340,000 passengers in December 2024, surpassing the previous record of 338,000 in December 2023.
The total included 229,000 domestic and 111,000 international travelers, marking only the second time international traffic exceeded 100,000 in a month. For the full year, the airport handled 3,426,000 passengers, a 16.3 percent increase from 2023’s 2,944,000.
Notably, international passenger traffic surged by 21.3 percent, exceeding one million for the first time, while domestic numbers rose by 14.1 percent.
Gumtala credited the surge to growing preference among Punjabis for direct international flights. “We are proud to share this milestone with the Punjabi community worldwide, which increasingly prefers to fly directly from the current 10 global destinations, including London, Birmingham, Doha, Dubai, Sharjah, Milan, Rome, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to Amritsar, rather than transiting through Delhi or traveling by road to Punjab,” Gumtala said.
With annual passenger traffic increasing by 500,000, Gumtala emphasized the urgent need for terminal expansion, improved parking, and enhanced passenger facilities. He urged the Punjab government to introduce intercity bus services for better airport accessibility.
“This growth underscores the airport’s immense potential as a regional hub for both international and domestic travel. We call on the authorities to prioritize terminal expansion and ensure the airport is equipped to handle future demand,” Gumtala concluded.
