Venugopal “Venu” Mukku, Ph.D., an Indian origin associate professor at the University of Minnesota Crookston, has been named a 2024-2025 recipient of the Horace T. Morse – University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.

Mukku, who hails from Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, was recognized for his long-standing dedication to student success, interdisciplinary research, and innovative teaching. The award includes a one-time cash prize and induction into the University’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Honorees receive the title of “Distinguished University Teaching Professor” and participate in ongoing academic programming led by the Academy.

A faculty member in the Math, Science, & Technology Department, Mukku also directs the UMC research lab and teaches Organic Chemistry. He was nominated by Associate Professor Brian Dingmann, Ph.D., and formally recognized alongside other awardees at a ceremony held Apr.7 at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis.

“This award is not just about my work – it is a reflection of the amazing students, colleagues, and mentors who have shaped my journey,” Mukku told the University of Minnesota Crookston. “To my students, past and present, thank you for your curiosity, dedication, and the countless hours of problem-solving, research, and discussion. Seeing your growth and success is the most rewarding part of my work.”

Mukku also credited his professional community for his development as an educator. “I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to my colleagues and nominators who supported me through this process,” he said. “Your encouragement and collaboration have enriched my teaching and research in so many ways.”

Mukku’s educational journey began in India, where he earned a B.Sc. in 1988 and an M.Sc. in 1990 from the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Prasanthi Nilayam. He completed his Ph.D. in 1995 at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

At UMC, he is known for integrating research with instruction, enhancing international learning experiences, and leading the Center for Collaborative Research, which supports the development of new interdisciplinary courses. Mukku also advises students in the health sciences program and is active in initiatives aimed at strengthening campus belonging.

“I nominated Dr. Venugopal Mukku for this award because of his unwavering dedication to student success, innovative teaching, and transformative mentorship,” said Dingmann. “His ability to inspire critical thinking, foster research excellence, and expand global learning opportunities has profoundly impacted our students and the University of Minnesota Crookston community.”

Since 1965, the Horace T. Morse – University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award has honored faculty who have made outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.
