The Annapurna Certificate, introduced in 2023 by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), celebrates Indian restaurants abroad that serve authentic Indian flavors.

Named after Annapurna, the Hindu goddess of food, the award seeks to honor establishments that not only serve genuine Indian cuisine but also promote cultural exchange.

In its inaugural year, the Annapurna Certificate was awarded to six restaurants worldwide. The winners were Amber India (USA), Balaji Dosai (Sri Lanka), Indian Street Food & Co. (Sweden), Mumtaz Mahal Restaurant (Oman), Namaste India (Mongolia), and Naans and Curries (Costa Rica).

This initiative challenges common stereotypes of Indian food, which is often reduced to spicy curries and vegetarian dishes. Instead, the award highlights the vast diversity and authenticity of Indian culinary practices, showcasing the full range of flavors, techniques, and regional specialties that make Indian palate unique.

In 2024, the ICCR received 16 nominations from restaurants that represent India's heritage across the globe. As of Dec. 27, however, the winners have not been announced. The award aims to elevate the global perception of Indian food, positioning these restaurants as cultural ambassadors and fostering a deeper appreciation for the country's culinary arts worldwide.

While Michelin remains a broader global standard for fine dining, the Annapurna Award specifically honors Indian cuisine abroad, providing a platform for restaurants to gain recognition for their authenticity and role in promoting culinary diplomacy.

However the award is important for several reasons as it positions restaurants as cultural ambassadors, fostering a deeper global appreciation for Indian culinary traditions; it challenges stereotypes and promotes authentic Indian food, elevating its global perception.

Winning the award brings international recognition, strengthens cultural ties between India and the world, and opens up opportunities for growth by attracting more customers and boosting a restaurant's reputation.

Selection criteria for the award

The Annapurna Certificate will be awarded to one winner, with separate certificates given if there are multiple winners. Each winner will also receive a plaque. The competition is open to Indian restaurants abroad that have made a significant contribution to promoting authentic Indian cuisine.

Restaurants must have been in operation for at least five years and comply with food safety and local regulations. The competition is open to all Indian restaurants, regardless of the owner's nationality, but associations or organizations are not eligible.

Eligible restaurants must submit their application to the Indian Mission/Post, which will forward the best applications to the ICCR.

A jury appointed by ICCR will make the final selection, and a scrutinizing committee may review applications if needed. The certificate will be awarded annually.

The Annapurna Certificates for 2023 were presented on Dec. 12, 2023, at Kamal Mahal, ITC Maurya, New Delhi. The ceremony was graced by chief guest Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, and Guest of Honour Hema Malini, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha.
