The University of New Brunswick (UNB) launched its prestigious scholarship program designed for international students, which has been made feasible courtesy of a US$700,000 contribution from the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation.
Named after Lady Violet Aitken, who served as the chancellor of UNB from 1982 to 1992 and continued her involvement as chancellor emerita, the inaugural scholarship was awarded to Arushi Sabnis, a student originally from Mumbai who grew up in Bahrain.
Currently in her second year of Mechanical Engineering at UNB's Fredericton campus, Sabnis has actively participated in volunteer work with organizations like Go ENG Girl and various UNB initiatives. She also holds the position of junior editor-in-chief at the Atlantic Student Research Journal and has aspirations of building a career in the aerospace industry.
Expressing her gratitude for the Lady Vi Aitken Scholarship, and the significant support it has provided her in pursuing her dreams, Sabnis said, “Being able to afford international tuition was only possible because I got this scholarship.”
The Lady Vi Aitken Scholarship pays tribute to the memory of Violet Aitken referred to as "Lady Vi," she was the third member of the Aitken family to hold the position of chancellor, making frequent trips from her home in England to actively engage in campus events.
Continuing the legacy of internationalization, Lady Vi Scholars are welcomed to UNB from various parts of the world, thereby enhancing UNB's already diverse community, which includes over 1,000 Beaverbrook Scholars, contributing to a more extensive network of leadership and academic distinction within the university.
