Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the House minority, has hired Asha Armstrong as his cloakroom assistant. The young Indian American announced the news on LinkedIn. “I am happy to share that I am the new House Democratic Cloakroom Assistant for the Office of the Democratic Leader,” she wrote, adding that she’s ‘grateful’ for her time in Ranking Member Nadler’s office and is ‘looking forward to taking this next step.’

The cloakrooms, which are located away from the House and Senate chambers' floors, provide members "the ability to converse, relax, discuss legislative strategy, or prepare for Floor business," according to the website for the House Democratic Cloakroom. Every party has a separate cloakroom.

The duties of cloakroom attendants include “alerting lawmakers when votes are coming up, telling them whether the chamber will be open on a snow day and working with pages to deliver messages,” CNN noted in a report.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Armstrong began her career in Washington as an intern in the office of California Democrat Rep. Ami Bera. Before joining Rep. Nadler's staff, she worked as an intern for Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.). Previously, she interned for the Democratic Party, the state Senate, and Molina Healthcare's legal department in California.

Armstrong received a Political Science and Government degree from American University in 2021, as well as a Communications minor.
