Ashmita Kumar, a third-year undergraduate at UC Berkeley, is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and everyday technology to detect early signs of strokes—an idea inspired by her own family's experiences. Her startup, Code Blue, uses the cameras and microphones on smartphones, computers, and smart devices to monitor for symptoms and alert users to seek immediate medical help. The program can also notify emergency services, potentially saving lives by reducing treatment delays.

According to UC Berkeley News, Kumar was just eight years old when her grandfather suffered a stroke. Without recognizing the telltale signs—drooping face and slurred speech—he delayed seeking medical attention, leading to severe and lasting effects. Years later, in 2021, Kumar saw half of her father’s face begin to sag. Aware of her family's stroke history, she urged him to seek medical attention. Fortunately, it wasn’t a stroke, but the experience sparked curiosity about the possibility of detecting stroke signs with everyday devices.
