Ashwin Ramaswami, the first Gen-Z Indian-American candidate for a U.S. state legislature, has secured victory in the Democratic primary in Georgia.
The 23-year-old, will face Republican Senator Shawn Still in November, a candidate indicted alongside Donald Trump for being a fake elector in 2020. The race is for what Ramaswami describes as "the most flippable State Senate seat in Georgia."

Ramaswami’s win marks a significant milestone as it positions him to create history as Georgia's first Gen Z State Senator and the only legislator in the state to hold both a computer science and law degree.
Born to Indian immigrant parents from Tamil Nadu, Ramaswami attended Chinmaya Mission Balavihar and later graduated with a computer science degree from Stanford University. His early education at Chinmaya sparked an interest in Sanskrit and ancient Indian texts, blending his dual identity of Indian and American cultures.
Ramaswami’s professional journey includes working with nonprofits, startups, and small businesses to leverage technology for public interest and job creation. He has also served at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), focusing on cybersecurity and election security during the 2020 and 2022 elections.
Additionally, he worked as a legal fellow in the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
With over $280,000 raised and $208,000 in cash on hand, Ramaswami’s campaign is well-positioned for the general election. His victory in the Democratic primary sets the stage for increased political representation and underscores the increasing engagement of young, diverse candidates in American politics.
