ASUW to form South Asian Student Commission
The commission if formed would highlight South Asian culture at the University of Washington

The Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) board of directors (BOD) in a recent meeting discussed the formation of a commission dedicated to students of South Asian descent.
The ASUW describes itself as the democratic voice of the students, with a mission to serve the campus through events, programming, and advocacy. The bill, which was discussed during their meeting focuses on increasing representation, opportunities, and resources for students of South Asian descent.
A task force was created to bring out the establishment of the commission that will remedy the lack of South Asian leadership within the Asian Student Commission (ASC). Members of the task force consisting of operations coordinator Khushi Loomba, BOD coordinator Maya Lukalapu, and the director of diversity efforts Leah Sishu, presented their suggestions during the meeting, the University paper reported.
The BOD analyzed the presentation and offered critiques to improve the efficiency of survey data. The task force will present its final report on March 7, after which the BOD will decide on the commission.
The proposed commission would provide programming, services, and resources to the South Asian diaspora students and organizations at the university. Once formed, it would highlight South Asian culture which members of the task force believe is historically underrepresented.
“South Asian culture is so rich,” Loomba told the Daily (the university’s paper). “There are a bunch of different [events] that all these South Asian RSOs and students would be able to throw,” she added.
