Two more Australian cricketers have signed with Washington Freedom for the upcoming season of the Major Cricket League (MLC) following Steve Smith’s addition to the team earlier this month.
Maxwell said that the familiar faces of Head and Smith as well as Ricky Pointing as the team’s coach convinced him to sign with the team and he is excited to play in the American tournament.
In an interview with ESPN’s Around the Wicket he said, “Having Travis and Steve there and Ricky, three guys who I’m extremely familiar with, I think that sort of probably tipped me over the edge.”
“It’s a tournament that I watched from afar last year and was extremely excited about hopefully playing this tournament one day and luckily enough the timings have aligned this year,” Maxwell said.
Maxwell withdrew from the playing XI for his IPL team (Royal Challengers Bangalore) owing to his poor form, he told the hosts that he is also suffering from a minor hip injury.
Unlike Maxwell, fellow Aussie Travis Head, who also signed with the Washington team is seen in great form in the Indian Premier League’s ongoing season. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Head has produced a 39-ball century, the fourth fastest in IPL history – guiding his side to victory.
The second season of Major League Cricket is due to kick off in July.

This is a good shot at IPL. Taking Cricket to America does challenge baseball, basketball, soccer, ice-hockey, football and other sports. The hope is that the immigrants from the commonwealth will carry the sport. The weaknesses are 1) No domestic talent to speak of 2) Not enough infrastructure 3) No presence in local schools 4) Will need a lot of VISAs to Indians to travel to the games, which are played over 4 months
