Australia-based Deakin University has opened its first international campus in India in line with the collaboration between the Indian and Australian Governments.
The new campus aligns with PM Narendra Modi’s National Education Policy 2020, emphasizing knowledge exchange and educational excellence.
Ahead of the official inauguration of the campus, PM Modi held discussions with a delegation from Deakin University. The meeting centered around strengthening collaboration between governments and academic institutions, particularly in the field of cybersecurity.
Deakin, among the top 1 percent globally, was represented by John Stanhope AM (chancellor), professor Iain Martin (vice-chancellor), and Ravneet Pawha (Vice-President, Global Alliances, and CEO for South Asia) at the meeting.
"Australia setting up India's first-ever foreign university campus is a landmark moment in Australia–India relations. This opens a new chapter in our education ties, and this is only the beginning," said Philip Green OAM, Australian High Commissioner to India, addressing the inauguration ceremony at the India campus in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Deakin's GIFT City Campus will provide local students with access to Deakin's state-of-the-art postgraduate courses in business analytics and cybersecurity. These courses will cost about half of the international fees in Australia.
The campus is equipped with new-age digital classrooms, libraries, and cybersecurity labs, designed to provide students with an outstanding educational experience. Its seamless digital integration with Deakin's Australian campuses ensures that students have comprehensive access to essential learning resources.
With India's workforce growing and changing in emerging technology sectors, Deakin University also plans to expand its academic offerings at the India campus. This expansion will focus on preparing students for leadership roles in the global market while positioning Deakin as a significant contributor to India's expanding digital workforce.
The campus will function as a startup incubator, fostering entrepreneurial talent and innovation. Through specialized short courses and comprehensive support, it aims to uplift the regional startup landscape.
After the launch, Deakin University also initiated its industry engagements with the inaugural Deakin University x IABCA Leadership Roundtable. The event facilitated a participative dialogue on 'Building Sustainable Futures across the Australia–India Corridor,' bringing together influential figures from both the Indian and Australian governments and industries.
