Bollywood film “Animal” starring Ranbir Kapoor emerged as one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023, despite facing criticism and being labelled ‘misogynistic’ and ‘too violent.’
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film showcases a gripping father-son relationship. It received a massive worldwide gross collection of over US$ 105 million, marking a game-changing moment in Kapoor’s career.
Amid the criticism over its violent depiction, the film’s success was met with contrasting opinions by Bollywood actors during a recent roundtable discussion hosted by Bollywood Hungama. Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi expressed his unique perspective, comparing “Animal” to the male version of “Kill Bill”.
"I look at films as complete entertainment, and when you go to the theatre, this is what you want to watch,” Warsi asserted.
Actor Aparshakti Khurana, known for his role in Bollywood film “Jubilee,” acknowledged the movie’s ability to make viewers forget their moral compass. He praised its unique composition, adding that the film “had really good structured scenes which were so engaging.”
Manoj Bajpayee echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that films are not meant to change society, but to be engaging. “If it engages you, you completely forget about morality, all your principles, and everything and you just watch a story,” he acknowledged.
Leading Bollywood film producer Karan Johar also showered high praises for “Animal” during the Galatta Plus Mega Pan-India Round Table 2023. Despite potential judgment from critics, he boldly declared “Animal” as the best film of the year and highlighted its game-changing impact.
“Animal to me is the best film of the year. It took me a while to reach this statement and a lot of courage because when you are around people, you fear judgment,” Johar said.
With a 3-hour-21-minute run-time, “Animal” was released in five languages on December 1, 2023. It features a star-studded cast, including Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandana, Bobby Deol, Shakti Kapoor, and Triptii Dimri. The film’s ability to captivate audiences and generate substantial box office earnings underscores its significance in the ever-evolving landscape of Bollywood cinema.
