Balaji Padmanabhan, a pioneer in introducing machine learning to MBA programs, is set to become a member of the faculty at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business starting this fall.
Having served as a professor of information systems, Padmanabhan played a pivotal role in creating an innovative elective titled "Enabling Technologies" for MBA students during his tenure at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. According to the University of Maryland, he brings a wealth of knowledge garnered over 25 years of research, teaching, and substantial engagement with businesses, particularly in the realms of AI, machine learning, and business analytics.
Prabhudev Konana, dean of UMD's Smith School, said Padmanabhan will "strengthen our research and focus on developing future leaders in a changing world driven by artificial intelligence and grand challenges like AI bias and 'dis/misinformation.'”. According to him, Padmanaban will not only bolster the information systems faculty but also position Smith's MBA and MS curricula to be transformational by contextualizing AI for the future.
“Business problem-solving is critical in the face of increasingly disruptive forces across industries and career fields that have economic and social implications. We're tapping expertise on key issues such as 'equitable growth and lending,' 'AI bias and reducing misinformation,' 'influence of political polarization on businesses,' 'environmental and governance disclosure,' 'sustainable supply chains," and 'embracing demographic diversity within organizations,” the dean added.
