The Kempegowda International Airport's Terminal 2 (KIA T2) in Bengaluru has been awarded the UNESCO Prix Versailles 'World Special Prize for an Interior 2023'.
According to Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), KIA T2 is now the only airport in India to receive recognition in the global assessment carried out by the Prix Versailles 2023 judges panel, which was chaired by the fashion designer Elie Saab.
Notably, the 64-acre (2,55,661 square meters) terminal is built with a focus on four main aspects: ecological and environmental care, a terminal with a garden, technological leadership, and a celebration of Karnataka's legacy.
Terminal 2 is in line with the IGBC Green New Building Rating system and was previously acknowledged with the esteemed IGBC platinum accreditation by the Indian Green Building Council.
The sustainable design of T2 has been pre-certified with a platinum LEED certification by the US Green Building Council even before it opened for business. According to an official release, the terminal has also been awarded the highly sought-after platinum accreditation under the IGBC green new construction rating system.
T2 also provides a glimpse of the state and nation's vast cultural diversity, through its distinctive fusion of art and technology. Phase 1 of T2, intended to accommodate 25 million passengers annually, was inaugurated on November 11, 2022.
