The Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Akshardham temple, the largest Hindu temple outside India, in Robbinsville New Jersey, was officially inaugurated on October 8 in a grand dedication ceremony.
BAPS leader Mahant Swami Maharaj along with dignitaries including Congressman Steny Hoyer, Congressman Andy Kim, Governor John Carney of Delaware, Consul General of India in New York Randhir Jaiswal inaugurated the temple.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Representative Hoyer said, “This mandir is not merely an architectural marvel though, that it is, it is a symbol of the bond between America and India and our shared commitment to our values and our faith. It is a testament to how the Indian American community has so enriched, our culture and become a crucial, critical part of our American family.”
Governor Carney in his speech spoke about his recent trip to India and Delaware’s sister state Gujarat. He praised the kindness of the people and said it is what the same kindness he has experienced at the temple.
Recalling Swami’s words the Governor reiterated that, “the temple is a bridge, a bridge from the past to the future, a bridge from India to America, a bridge from one community to the next and incredible place for faith and devotion.”
The Consul General in his speech appreciated the various facets of the mandir and hailed it as an embodiment of the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (World is one Family) spirit. On the occasion, he also shared with the audience Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message on the inauguration.

“The inaugural celebrations of Akshardham Mahamandir showcases Indian architectural excellence and our glorious ancient culture and ethos. It will also help in establishing a connect between the members of the Indian diaspora, particularly the youth, to connect with and take pride in Maa Bharati,” the PM’s message read.
Hundreds of devotees from across the nation attended the grand ceremony. Volunteers performed celebratory dances and sung songs in praise of the Lord Swaminarayan, India, and the iconic temple, that will be a center of Hindu faith and ideals in the United States.
