Indian-American tennis player, Nishesh Basavareddy, earned high praise from tennis great Novak Djokovic despite losing to him in the first round of the Australian Open on Jan.13.

Making his Australian Open debut, the 19-year-old American wildcard lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2  but managed to take the tennis world by surprise, pushing Djokovic to his limits in their nearly three-hour encounter.

The 10-time Australian Open champion acknowledged the young American’s remarkable effort, calling him the “better player for a set and a half.” “He deserves every bit of applause he got when leaving the court,” Djokovic said after the match. “He’s a very complete player, and I wish him all the best for the rest of his career.”

Djokovic, playing under the guidance of new coach Andy Murray, started his first-round match at a disadvantage as Basavareddy came out strong. The teenager’s solid return game and helped him break Djokovic’s serve in the seventh game of the opening set, which he won 6-4.

Basavareddy’s impressive composure under pressure was evident as he held serve and even threatened to extend his lead. However, Djokovic began to find his rhythm, capitalizing on Basavareddy’s physical struggles in the third set. As the match progressed, the young American’s movement became hindered due to a cramp, giving Djokovic the upper hand.

The Serbian, known for his resilience and tactical adjustments, fought back with authority, claiming the next three sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Despite the defeat, Basavareddy’s performance on his Grand Slam debut left a lasting impression, showcasing his potential for future success.

Djokovic now advances to the second round, where he will face Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria.
