Earlier this month, Yogesh Raut won the 2024 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions and bagged the US$ 250,000 prize.

In a post on Jeopardy.com Raut, who is from Vancouver Washington said that growing up as an immigrant fuelled his desire to learn about his surroundings. He also noted that that many top quizzers are from minority communities due to the same reason.

“When one is caught between cultures and unsure of one’s place in the world, the search for meaning gets kicked into overdrive. This leads to the absorption of facts, because facts are key to assembling new frameworks of meaning,” Raut reflected.

“Growing up as the child of immigrants, with a foreign-sounding name in the heart of Central Illinois, I had to prove every day that I was an American,” he added. “Trivia’ sticks with us precisely because it is not trivial. Not only is it inherently interesting, but for less privileged members of society, sometimes it’s a matter of survival.”

With the win Raut became the first player to notch three victories in the finals. He will go on to compete in the upcoming Jeopardy! Masters competition, where he will face off against some of the top-performing players in Jeopardy! history.
