Berrett-Koehler Publishers names Praveen Madan as CEO

The appointment comes as the current CEO and publisher, David Marshall, retires after 17 years of dedicated service.

Oakland-based independent publishing firm, Berrett-Koehler Publishers (BK) has announced that Praveen Madan will take over as the new CEO and publisher following the retirement of current CEO and publisher, David Marshall, after 17 years of service.

Madan, renowned for his innovative strategies and leadership in the publishing industry, expressed honor and gratitude for the opportunity to serve the global Berrett-Koehler community. 

According to a a statement issued by the publishing house, Madan aims to forge a new model that strengthens BK’s roots as an author-friendly, mission-based book publisher while fostering innovation and collaboration with partners. 

As CEO of Kepler’s Books since 2012, Madan led a turnaround and reinvention of the iconic cultural institution. His innovative strategies, including embracing the nonprofit model, community financing, and governance, have been replicated by bookstores across the United States, a release stated.

Berrett-Koehler founder and senior editor, Steve Piersanti, welcomed Madan’s appointment and highlighted his unique blend of outsider and insider experience, combining business consulting, independent bookselling leadership, and years of service on the BK board of directors.

Joyce Roché, BK author and board chair, expressed confidence in Madan, stating that he possesses the brainpower, industry experience, and passion needed during this challenging time in the company’s history.

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, Madan has an MBA from the University of Texas, Austin. Following a decade at Kearney, a global management consulting firm, he ventured into the publishing industry.
