Bharat-India row: PM Modi sends message at G20

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the inaugural session of the G20 Leaders Summit on September 9 in New Delhi sat behind a nameplate that read “Bharat” instead of the usual India.
This comes after a controversy over the name change from India to Bharat as evident in the dinner invitation from President Murmu to leaders attending G20 Summit. The invitations were sent out in the name of the “President of Bharat”, and not the President of India.
While there is no official confirmation on the name change, reports indicate that a proposal for the same will be tabled by the BJP-led NDA government during the Parliament’s special session, that is scheduled to begin on September 18 for a period of five days.
For the name change to become official, the Constitution will need to be amended which will need to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament. The ruling government has previously renamed Rajpath as Kartavya Path, and the Race Course Road, on which the Prime Minister’s official residence is located, as Lok Kalyan Marg among others
