Incumbent Joe Biden has closed in on the lead maintained by his Republican opponent Donald Trump in the presidential race, a recent poll by The New York Times and Siena College has revealed.
In the latest survey, Trump holds a one percent lead (46 percent) over President Biden's 45 percent, an improvement for the latter from late February, when Trump had a larger 48 percent to 43 percent lead. With these close results, Biden has nearly minimised Trump's early polling advantage amid receiving criticism for his age, his handling of the economy and the war in the Middle East.
However, the poll also shows that a large number of the voters, nearly one in five or 18 percent, are unhappy with both the candidates. "Among those double haters, Biden leads 30-21 percent with nearly half saying they would vote for someone else, stay home or that they are yet to make a decision," the findings stated. While Trump's federal indictments contribute to his unpopularity, Biden's age is a major factor.
Apart from the two candidates, 64 percent voters believe that the US is “headed in the wrong direction" while almost 80 percent of voters still rate the nation’s economic conditions as fair or poor.79 percent, up from 73 percent in February, give the economy a negative grade. "Nearly two-thirds approve of how Trump handled the economy while president while 63 percent currently disapprove of Biden’s economic stewardship," the results show.
