Biden proclaims June as National Immigrant Heritage Month

President Joe Biden has officially proclaimed June 2024 as National Immigrant Heritage Month, honoring the significant contributions and the enduring courage of immigrants in the United States.
In his proclamation issued on May 31, Biden highlighted the diverse backgrounds of Americans, emphasizing the shared dreams and aspirations that unite all who come to the U.S.
"America is the only country in the world with a heart and soul that draws from old and new," Biden’s proclamation reads. "We are home to people whose ancestors have been here for thousands of years and home to people from every place on Earth."
Reflecting on his personal heritage, Biden recounted his family’s journey from Ireland in the mid-1800s, drawn by the promise of a better life amidst famine. He also noted Vice President Kamala Harris' roots, with her parents emigrating from India and Jamaica.
The President underscored the vital role immigrants play in strengthening the U.S. economy, citing their significant presence in various sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, technology, and business. He highlighted that immigrants contribute hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes and create millions of jobs annually.
Biden reiterated his administration's efforts to reform the U.S. immigration system. On his first day in office, he presented a comprehensive plan to Congress aimed at expanding legal immigration pathways and protecting Dreamers. His administration has also rebuilt the United States Refugee Admissions Program and defended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy in court.
In a call to action, Biden urged Congress to provide the necessary funding and resources to secure the border and implement comprehensive immigration reform. He also stressed the importance of combating hate and discrimination against immigrant communities, referencing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and the White House Initiative on Hate-Motivated Violence.
"As Americans, we have an obligation to ensure that everyone feels safe and respected," Biden declared. He encouraged the public to learn about the nation’s diverse immigrant communities and to celebrate their contributions throughout June.
