Births among UK-migrant parents surge
India became the most common country of birth for non-UK-born mothers in 2022, for the first time since 2003.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) of the United Kingdom published a report on the annual statistics of live births in the country, including the countries of origin for immigrant parents. It was revealed that 30.3 percent of live births in England and Wales in 2022 were to women born outside the United Kingdom, the majority of whom were Indian.
“Almost a third of all those births were to non-UK-born women. This is the highest proportion of live births to non-UK-born women seen since our records began, with India now the most common country of birth for non-UK-born parents,” James Tucker, the head of health analysis at the ONS, was quoted as saying by the Guardian.
The ONS report further revealed that India had replaced Romania to become the most common country of birth for non-UK-born mothers in 2022, for the first time since 2003. There were 17,745 live births to women born in India, a 16.3 percent increase from 15,260 in 2021. Additionally, India replaced Pakistan to become the most common birth country for non-UK-born fathers in 2022. There were 18,013 live births to fathers born in India in 2022, a 16.6 percent increase from 15,452 in 2021.
Out of all the English regions and Wales, London had the highest percentage of live birth where either one or both parents were born outside the UK. About 66.5 percent of children were born to non-UK-born parents, a one percent increase from 65.5 per cent in 2021. The ONS said birth statistics represented births that occurred and were registered in England and Wales.
