Indian politician Lal Krishna Advani, one of the co-founders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been conferred the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country.

Advani expressed his sentiments on being conferred with the Bharat Ratna, saying, "Not only an honor for me as a person but also for ideals and principles that I strove to serve."

Taking to social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Advani as one among the most respected statesmen of the country and stated that his contributions to the development of the country are monumental.

"His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister. He distinguished himself as our Home Minister and I&B Minister as well. His Parliamentary interventions have always been exemplary, full of rich insights,” Modi added about Advani's journey in politics.

The Prime Minister noted that Advani’s service in public life has been marked by an unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity, setting exemplary standards in political ethics.

"He has made unparalleled efforts towards furthering national unity and cultural resurgence. The conferring of the Bharat Ratna on him is a very emotional moment for me. I will always consider it my privilege that I got countless opportunities to interact with him and learn from him," Modi underlined.

Born in 1927 pre-independent Karachi (now Pakistan), Advani migrated to Bombay during the partition and graduated in law from the Government Law College of Bombay University.

He went on to join the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1941 at the age of 14. In the later years, he formed the BJP along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its first president. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1970 and the Lok Sabha in 1989.

Advani was the Minister Of Home Affairs from 1998 to 2004, the longest-ever for the post and Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004. He was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, second highest civilian honor in 2015.
