A 22-year-old student from Kerala, India named Santra Saju was discovered dead in a river close to Newbridge, Scotland, on December 27. She had gone missing since December 6.

Saju was a student at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Local police announced the discovery, stating that while formal identification is pending, her family has been informed.

"Around 11:55 a.m. on Friday, Dec 27, police were made aware of a body found in the water near Newbridge. The death is not believed to be suspicious. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal," the police statement read.

Saju was last seen on Dec. 6 at an Asda supermarket in Almondvale, Livingston. Her disappearance had prompted an urgent police appeal, describing her as 5 feet 6 inches tall, of Indian ethnicity, with a slim build, short black hair, and wearing a black jacket with a fur-lined hood, beige earmuffs, and a black facemask. She was also carrying a black rucksack.

Inspector Alison Lawrie of Corstorphine Police Station had highlighted a crucial clue during the search. "We now know that Santra picked up a black-and-white shopper-style bag from an address in Burnvale on Friday evening, but she did not have it when she entered the supermarket. The bag is distinctive, and someone may remember seeing her carrying it," she said at the time.

Lawrie also confirmed that extensive CCTV reviews and inquiries were conducted in an effort to locate her.

Saju’s family and friends had described her disappearance as out of character and had expressed grave concern for her safety. The discovery has left the university community and her loved ones in mourning.
