Merlin D’souza, an Indian American student from Casa Grande, Arizona, always knew education was a privilege. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she grew up hearing stories of sacrifice. Her father had left school early to work, and her mother’s dream of higher education was cut short by the demands of farm labor. But when D’souza set her sights on Harvard, her parents never wavered in their support.
Now a senior concentrating in human developmental and regenerative biology and global health and health policy, D’souza’s journey to Cambridge wasn’t just about academics, it was also about financial hurdles. Harvard’s full financial aid package made it possible for her to attend without burdening her family.
