Brampton cancels Hindu Heritage Month over labour disruption

The City of Brampton has announced the cancellation of the Hindu Heritage Month flag-raising event, initially scheduled for Nov. 23.
The cancellation is due to an ongoing labor disruption involving the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 831, which represents the city’s workers. As a result of this strike, many city services have been reduced, with only essential and emergency services prioritized for residents.

City officials confirmed that the community flag-raising program is one of the services affected by these reductions and will be on hold until 2025.
The City expressed its commitment to resolving the labor dispute by negotiating a fair, long-term agreement that supports city employees while balancing fiscal responsibility for Brampton residents.
The Hindu community in Brampton has voiced disappointment over the cancellation, noting that with increasing concerns over terrorism, such events play a vital role in strengthening community ties and fostering inclusion. Community members hope that city officials will address their concerns and ensure future cultural events are protected from disruption.
