Shankar K. Prasad, dean of Brown University’s School of Professional Studies since 2022, will step down on Jan. 31 to join Carnegie, a higher education marketing and enrollment strategy firm, as chief strategy officer.
A Brown alumnus with a doctorate in political science, Prasad has played a pivotal role in expanding the university’s master’s and non-degree programs, launching its first exclusively online degree, and broadening access for diverse learners.
“Shankar has been instrumental in building on Brown’s academic strengths, delivering instruction in compelling new ways, and making Brown’s world-class education accessible to a diverse range of learners across the globe,” said Francis J. Doyle III, Brown’s provost. “He leaves a lasting impact on initiatives spanning online education, global engagement, and graduate student support.”
As dean, Prasad expanded professional offerings, introduced corporate and certificate programs, and established the Center for Master’s Student Excellence to enhance student support and career development.
Before becoming dean, Prasad served in multiple leadership roles, including deputy provost and vice president for academic innovation. His efforts included advancing Brown’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, strengthening global engagement initiatives, and leading strategic reorganizations for various schools and institutes. Notably, he played a significant role in academic continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prasad’s achievements also extended to internationalization efforts, including drafting Brown’s first global strategy and supporting the launch of the Global Brown lounge. These initiatives earned the university the 2019 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization.
In his new role at Carnegie, Prasad will oversee enterprise strategy, student search and success, and presidential advisory services.
Reflecting on his decade at Brown, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as both an administrator and a student. “It has been deeply rewarding to advance Brown’s mission by creating pathways for diverse learners worldwide, all while collaborating with dedicated and brilliant colleagues,” he said.
Sandra Smith, senior associate dean, will serve as interim dean while plans for a national search for Prasad’s successor are underway.
Prasad holds an MBA from MIT and bachelor’s degrees in finance, political science, and French from Rutgers University. Before his tenure at Brown, he served as director of undergraduate studies at New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
