California State University (CSU), Los Angeles, has honored Nanda Ganesan, a professor and chair of the Department of Information Systems, with the CSU Wang Family Excellence Award for outstanding faculty teaching.
The $20,000 award recognizes exceptional contributions to student achievement and excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Ganesan is one of only five recipients of the award selected from the 23 campuses within the CSU system this year.
At the university, Ganesan has served multiple terms as chair of the Department of Information Systems and chaired various committees on accreditation, assessment, and faculty evaluation.
Ganesan spearheaded significant updates to the university’s computer information systems program, introducing specializations in cybersecurity, data analytics, and software development. He also co-founded the master’s program in information systems, one of California’s first graduate programs in the field.
Additionally, Ganesan is renowned for his innovative teaching practices, including the redesign of the management information systems course, which received high praise for its online quality. He was recognized with numerous awards, including the Fulbright Award and the Cal State LA President’s Distinguished Professor Award.
Reflecting on the honor, Ganesan expressed gratitude, stating, “The students at Cal State LA reward us amply with their yearning for learning and their gratitude. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been blessed with a fulfilling career at Cal State LA that I enjoy and cherish deeply. This award acknowledges my four decades of commitment to students as a professor, advisor, mentor, and department chair, dedicated to shaping their lives and empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to pursue successful careers.”
University president Berenecea Johnson Eanes commended Ganesan for his innovation in teaching and his leadership in advancing the department’s curriculum. “Ganesan embodies the qualities of an exemplary educator, continuously advancing teaching practices, fostering academic growth, and making significant contributions to the learning environment at Cal State LA.”
The award, provided through a gift from CSU trustee emeritus Stanley T. Wang, celebrates faculty and staff who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to advancing the mission of the CSU system.
