Canada introduces cap on study permit applications
The study permit applications will be allocated among territories and provinces, with some receiving a more number of applications than others

Canada, known as one of the preferred destinations for Indian students, recently announced changes in its immigration policies.
In 2023, nearly 319,000 Indian students chose Canada for their higher education. In 2022, 40 percent of 800,000 student permits were issued to Indian students. With the recent changes in visa application fees, they also introduced a cap on applications.
Marc Miller, the Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC), announced in a statement about the national cap on study permit applications, aiming to address the rapid influx of international students into Canada.
Canada has set a target of 485,000 international study permits for the year 2024. This figure includes a deduction of 97,000 permits, which accounts for 20 percent of current students expected to apply for extensions. Additionally, a buffer of 24,000 permits has been allocated, resulting in a final target of 364,000 study permits to be granted this year. Given Canada's approval rate of 60 percent for study permit applications, the target number of applications for 2024 stands at 606,000.
“About 20 percent of students apply for an extension each year and remain in the country. Therefore, IRCC subtracted that amount (97,000) from the target of 485,000 and set aside a small buffer to allow for other variations, resulting in a revised target of 364,000 approved study permits in 2024, said IRCC.
The study permit applications will be allocated among territories and provinces, with some receiving a more number of applications than others.

Hope all these ambitious students find well-paying jobs after investing in their expensive foreign degrees. Canadian professors are not smarter than their Indian counterparts. The Canadian educational system is not ABET as an American institution. Still, a Canadian dollar is worth 61 Indian rupees. This country will continue to attract qualified immigrants who contribute to the national economy. Whereas the U.S. has the third largest population in the world and does not need immigrants.
