Canada records highest number of Indian student deaths

91 students died in Canada between 2018 to 2023, followed by the UK reporting the highest number of Indian student deaths

At least four hundred Indian students pursuing education in foreign educational institutes have died abroad due to various causes including accidents and medical conditions, since 2018. The  information was shared by a Minister in Rajya Sabha (RS) on November 7.

A large number of these deaths, 91 in total, were recorded in Canada, which is the preferred dedsination for majority of Indian students. As per data from the Ministry of External Affairs, 1,83,310 Indian students were studying in Canada in 2022. That number grew to 319,130 as of 2023, making India the dominant international student group in the country.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, in a written reply said to the parliament house said the second-highest deaths were reported in United Kingdom (48), followed by Russia (40), the United States (36), Australia (35), Ukraine (21), Germany (20), Cyprus (14), and ten deaths reported in Italy and the Philippines each.

"The safety and security of Indian students abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the Government of India," Muraleedharan told the house adding that heads of missions and posts regularly visit educational institutes to interact with Indian students.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi commented on the data presented in the parliamentary house, at a weekly press briefing. "I don't know if this is an issue that merits taking up with the government. There are individual incidents where there has been foul play and others... Our consulates do reach out to families, we also take it up such cases with the local authorities," he said.
