After successfully contesting the just concluded British Columbia elections, winning 15 of the 93 seats and their first-ever seat in the New Brunswick Provincial Assembly, 15 candidates of South Asian descent are now all set to try their luck in the Saskatchewan Provincial elections on Oct.28.

Though Gary Grewal became the first candidate of South Asian descent to sit in the Saskatchewan Assembly in 2020, he decided not to re-run this time.

While Rahul Singh, Khushdil Mehrok, Jaspreet Mander,  Parminder Singh, Zahid Sandhu, Mumtaz Naseeb, Liaqat Ali, Muhamad Fiaz,  Riaz Ahmed, Caesar Khan are contesting as candidates of the ruling Saskatchewan Party, three others – Bhajan Brar, Dr Tejinder Grewal, and Noor Burki – are the nominees of the New Democratic Party. Vicky Mowat is the lone candidate of South Asian descent representing the Saskatoon Freedom Party.

The population of migrants from various South Asian countries, especially India and Pakistan, witnessed a phenomenal increase during the past few years. Now, when the Federal Government has decided to slash the quotas of fresh immigrants to Canada, some provinces have started experiencing a shortage of skilled and unskilled manpower.

Affordable housing, unemployment, inflation, and higher doses of taxes are the issues that political parties are trying to address in their pre-election campaigns with the ruling Saskatchewan Party in the lead.
