The Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP) has announced a CAD$1.3 million donation from the Shah Family Foundation to establish 13 endowment funds for university and college students with disabilities.
Established by Indian immigrants Kris and Neelam Shah, along with their family in 2022, the Shah Family Foundation is dedicated to supporting communities worldwide by promoting equitable access to education and healthcare, with a strong commitment to making a meaningful societal impact.
The funds will be named in honor of Vim Kochhar, CFPDP’s founder and volunteer CEO for over four decades, recognizing his extensive work in improving accessibility and opportunities for individuals with disabilities, an official statement said.
Kris Shah, president of the Shah Family Foundation, expressed his honor in supporting the initiative, saying, “The Shah Family Foundation is deeply honored to support this transformative initiative to advance equity, accessibility and opportunity in education in collaboration with Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons. By helping students with disabilities pursue their academic goals, we hope to build a legacy of inclusion, resilience, and progress that will benefit individuals and communities across Canada for generations to come.”
“Our work with CFPDP aligns perfectly with their mission to build academic pathways and cultivate leadership opportunities for students with disabilities. Together, the Shah Family Foundation and CFPDP aim to create a positive and lasting impact,” Neelam Shah said.
Vim Kochhar, who has led CFPDP for 41 years, said, “I am deeply moved to see visionaries like Kris and Neelam, along with their family, investing in creating opportunities that empower students with disabilities to become the executives, entrepreneurs and community changemakers of tomorrow.”
These endowment funds will be part of CFPDP’s “A Seat at the Table” (SATT) program, aimed at creating lasting educational opportunities for students across all provinces and territories. The Shah Family Foundation's gift will be matched by the universities and colleges, and CFPDP will add 10 percent to the total donation, bringing the overall investment to $2.82 million, the statement added.
