Canadian politicians have finally broken their silence on Donald Trump’s mocking onslaught describing Canada as the 51st state of the United States with its elected Prime Minister as its Governor-designate.
For more than two months, Canadian lawmakers refrained from commenting on the content of Donald Trump's Social Truth account. It all started in November when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accompanied by some senior members of his Government, including Cabinet Ministers, flew to Florida for a meeting with the US President-elect to clarify their position on smuggling of drugs and aliens through porous borders.
More than eight weeks after the first “mock”, leaders of two of the opposition parties - Conservatives and New Democrats - have retorted back strongly.
Their strong reactions come less than 24 hours after Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down from the leadership of the Liberal Party, a development, though expected, had shaken Canadian politics.
Pierre Poilievre, the Leader of official Opposition party, took to his social media handle, for his first reaction on the subject. “Canada will never be the 51st state. We are a great and independent country. We are the best friend to the U.S. We spent billions of dollars and hundreds of lives helping Americans retaliate against Al-Qaeda’s 9/11attacks. We supply the U.S. with billions of dollars of high-quality and totally reliable energy well below market prices. We buy hundreds of billions of dollars of American goods. Our weak and pathetic NDP-Liberal government has failed to make these obvious points. I will fight for Canada, " he said.
"When I am Prime Minister, we will rebuild our military and take back control of the border to secure both Canada and the U.S. We will take back control of our Arctic to keep Russia and China out. We will axe taxes, slash red tape and rapidly green-light massive resource projects to bring home pay cheques and production to our country. In other words, we will put Canada First."
Jagmeet Singh, Leader of New Democrats, was not far behind in attacking Donald Trump. In a social media post, Jagmeet Singh wrote, “ I am issuing a challenge today for anyone running to be Prime Minister. I have committed that Canada would respond to Trump's threats with retaliatory tariffs. That’s how you respond to a bully — with strength. You fight fire with fire to protect Canadian workers and their jobs."
In another post, he said: “Cut the crap, Donald. No Canadian wants to join you. We are proud Canadians. Proud of the way we take care of each other and defend our nation. Your attacks will hurt jobs on both sides of the border. You come for Canadians’ jobs, Americans will pay a price,” he added.
Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, who had earlier threatened to cut power supply to the US, also reacted in asocial media post, saying, "I have got a better deal for President Trump: let us work together to build Fortress Am-Can and take on the world. When Canada and the U.S. work together as two proud independent countries, we are unstoppable."
