Prominent Tamil actor and founder and general secretary of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party in Tamil Nadu, Vijayakant, died on December 28.

The 71-year-old passed away after being admitted to the hospital in Chennai due to an illness.

“Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023," MIOT International hospital said in a statement following his death.

Owing to his health concerns since November, his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth assumed the position of DMDK general secretary on December 15.

Vijayakanth entered the political sphere in 2005 when he established the DMDK. His political endeavor was to develop a rival political platform in Tamil Nadu, taking on well-established Dravidian parties like the AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam).

Born Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami, the Tamil actor was dubbed "Captain" for his unforgettable on-screen military roles. Some of his notable films include Vaidehi Kathirunthal (1984), Amman Kovil Kizhakale (1986), Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran (1988), Senthoora Poove (1988), Pulan Visaranai (1990), and Chinna Gounder (1992).

“Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape," PM Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
