Indian-origin Member of Parliament Chandra Arya officially announced his candidacy to become the next Prime Minister of Canada on Jan.10.
Unveiling a comprehensive plan to address pressing structural issues and secure prosperity for future generations, Arya, a Liberal MP representing Nepean, outlined his vision for a “smaller, more efficient government” while advocating for decisive action on economic inequality, housing affordability, and national security.
“We are facing significant structural problems that haven’t been seen for generations, and solving them will require tough choices,” Arya said in his announcement. “For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must make bold decisions that are absolutely necessary.”

The politician highlighted a range of pressing challenges, including growing wealth disparity, unaffordable housing, and a struggling middle class. He pointed to alarming statistics, such as youth unemployment at 14 percent and a significant number of Canadians retiring into poverty without adequate pensions, emphasizing the urgency of bold policy reforms.
Among his proposed solutions are significant changes to immigration policies, prioritizing skilled workers to address labor shortages in critical sectors like housing and advanced technology. Arya also called for reforms to restore the value of Canadian citizenship, advocating for a “just, citizenship-based taxation system” to ensure expatriates contribute to the country’s social infrastructure.
In a surprising declaration, Arya announced plans to make Canada a sovereign republic, moving away from its constitutional monarchy. He also set an ambitious economic target, aiming for Canada’s real GDP to reach $5 trillion within 25 years.
Arya’s pitch focuses on efficiency, innovation, and self-reliance. “Every government program and entity will face a simple question: Is it still relevant? If not, it’s gone or will be restructured to deliver economic development. No excuses, no waste,” he asserted.
The MP further proposed modernizing Canada’s national security framework, including criminalizing support for terrorism and establishing a 21st-century law enforcement agency to combat extremism, cybercrime, and foreign interference.
Arya’s personal story underscores his commitment to the Canadian Dream. An immigrant who arrived in Ottawa over 20 years ago with his wife and young son, Arya worked his way up through various roles in engineering, finance, and entrepreneurship before entering politics. “My story is proof positive that the Canadian Dream is real,” he remarked.
As he prepares for a leadership campaign within the Liberal Party, Arya invited Canadians to join his vision of rebuilding the nation. “Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make the big decisions,” Arya said. “Let’s rebuild, revitalize, and secure the future—for all Canadians, for generations to come.”
