Chandrayaan 3 shares first images after entering lunar orbit

The next orbit-lowering manoeuvre is anticipated to take place on Aug. 9.

India’s Chandrayaan-3 successfully entered the moon’s orbit three weeks after its launch according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). “Today, the Chandrayaan-3 mission achieved a crucial milestone with the successful completion of the Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI),” ISRO said in statement maintaining that the health of the lunar mission ship is normal.

The spacecraft is gradually moving closer to a soft landing on the moon by completing maneuvers to gradually reduce its orbit and position it over the lunar poles. "The retrofitting of engines brought it closer to the Moon's surface, now to 170 km x 4,313 km. The next operation to further reduce the orbit is scheduled for August 9, between 13:00 and 14:00 hours IST," ISRO posted on Twitter (renamed to X).

A specific landing site near the moon’s south pole will be determined within the next ten days. The propulsion module will separate from the lander while in orbit. Following that, the lander will deorbit and seek a soft touchdown. Meanwhile, ISRO released the first photographs of the moon captured Chandrayaan-3. The Indian Space agency has successfully placed its spacecraft into lunar orbit for the third time in a row, having previously done it in Martian orbit.
