The Houston chapter of Chinmaya Mission, a global Hindu spiritual organisation, hosted a Diwali celebration that combined traditional rituals with community service initiatives.
As a precursor to the event, the Chinmaya Mission youth group organized a food donation drive in line with CMH’s emphasis on “sacrifice and service,” as well as Diwali’s themes of generosity and community to assist local families in need. “Dipavali is not only a celebration but an opportunity to support our community,” said one youth group member involved in the drive.
The main event took place on Nov. 3 in CMH’s Smrti Hall, where families gathered for prayer with thalis (prayer plates) adorned with diyas (lamps). Spiritual guru Gaurang Nanavaty welcomed the gathering which was led in prayer and offered blessing and greetings for the new year. “This is a time for us to renew our inner light and seek wisdom,” he said, underscoring the festival’s focus on spiritual growth.
The ceremony led by priest Ganesh, included a Lakshmi puja and the chanting of the Visnu Sahasranama, invoking blessings for prosperity. “Through these prayers, we honor the spiritual essence of Dipavali,” noted the priest.
The event concluded with the practice of Guru Dakshina, a tradition of offering gratitude to the Guru, reflecting CMH’s observance of core values. Nanavaty was honored for his efforts in guiding the spiritual journey of the Chinmaya Mission members, to gain the wisdom of Advaita Vedanta—the philosophy of universal Oneness.
