Indian American Rep Shri Thanedar announced his formal disassociation from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in a statement on October 11. He cited the recent terrorist attacks on Israel, which involved heinous acts like indiscriminate murder, rape, and kidnapping of innocent individuals, as the reason for this decision.

Thanedar expressed his inability to remain affiliated with an organization that he believes has not sufficiently condemned terrorism in all its manifestations. He particularly highlighted his concerns after a recent hate-filled and antisemitic rally in New York City, which was promoted by the NYC-DSA.

The Congressman asserted his solidarity with Israel's right to self-defence and emphasized the incompatibility of moral equivocation in the face of the actions perpetrated by groups such as Hamas.

He affirmed his commitment to pursuing the same objectives that led him to Congress initially. These goals include advocating for universal healthcare, workers' rights, the empowerment of labour unions, equity for communities of colour, environmental justice, and compassionate immigration policies, he said in the statement.

Reiterating that his core principles have remained unchanged, Thanedar said that severing ties with the DSA is in the best interest of his constituents. He emphasized that his constituents expect him to represent them by working towards the creation of a fairer and more equitable world, rather than promoting discord or animosity.
