The city of Bellevue, Washington, has officially recognized India's upcoming 78th Independence Day by issuing a Proclamation declaring Aug. 15 as India Day.
Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson, representing the Bellevue City Council, has called this proclamation a, “symbol of the shared values of democracy, diversity, and inclusion.”
The Proclamation acknowledges Bellevue's celebration and recognition of the historical importance of India's Independence Day, as well as the unwavering spirit, resilience, and sacrifices of its people throughout their struggle for independence.
It also highlighted the strong cultural and economic connections between Washington state, Bellevue, and India, noting that the Indian American community, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, has made significant contributions in areas such as education, healthcare, technology, and economic development.
The statement further acknowledged that Indian Americans play a vital role as small business owners, entrepreneurs, and CEOs of numerous Washington companies, including those based in Bellevue's tech sector. These businesses contribute valuable services, resources, and employment opportunities to the residents of the state.
“Indian Americans reflect a multitude of diverse thoughts, cultures and religious identities while seeking to build bridges across all communities,” the proclamation added.
The Indian Consulate in Seattle welcomed the move stating, “Thank the City of Bellevue for the Proclamation issued to honor India’s upcoming 78th Independence Day! Appreciate your recognition of the role of the Indian American community in building bridges across all communities. Looking forward to welcoming the Bellevue City Council at the India Day celebrations on 15th August 2024,” in a post on X.
