The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) congratulated Tulsi Gabbard on her historic appointment as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), making her the first Hindu American to hold a cabinet-level position in the United States.
CoHNA president Nikunj Trivedi called Gabbard’s appointment a “moment of immense pride for the Hindu American community.” He highlighted her leadership, military background, and commitment to national security and human rights as key qualifications for the role.
"Her distinguished service in the military and in Congress, combined with her commitment to national security and human rights, make her uniquely suited for this critical role. We wish her great success as she takes on this important responsibility,” Trivedi added.
Gabbard, a veteran of the Army National Guard with over two decades of service, has completed deployments to Iraq and Kuwait, earning the Combat Medical Badge in 2005. She previously served four terms in Congress, advocating bipartisan solutions on national security, veterans’ healthcare, and constitutional protections.
She first made history in 2012 as the first Hindu American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. However, since then Gabbard has faced numerous attacks on her faith, which has been mocked as cultish, with her opponents also claiming that her positions make her a "Hindu nationalist."
According to CoHNA, she has since been an inspiration for Hindu Americans, openly embracing her faith and demonstrating how Hindu values have shaped her career.
As DNI, Gabbard will oversee the country’s intelligence agencies and provide critical national security briefings to the president. Her appointment signals a new chapter for the broader Hindu community in the United States, CoHNA stated.
