Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut led a high-profile delegation on a week-long economic development mission across India from Feb. 23 to March. 1, aiming to bolster economic ties and attract Indian businesses to the state.
The delegation, co-led by eminent Indian American and former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, visited Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, engaging with industry leaders, government officials, and investors.
In Chennai, the delegation participated in VentureClash India, a pitch event hosted by Connecticut Innovations at the IITM Research Park. The event connected high-growth Indian startups with Connecticut’s business and innovation ecosystem, creating opportunities for companies looking to expand into the U.S.

The Connecticut and Tamil Nadu governments also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost economic collaboration. The agreement aimed to strengthen ties in manufacturing, biosciences, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing, sectors where both regions have considerable expertise.
In Bengaluru, the delegation engaged in discussions with leaders in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and quantum computing. These meetings explored collaborative opportunities and positioned Connecticut as a favorable destination for Indian tech companies seeking to establish or expand their presence in the United States. The delegation also participated in a Deloitte Investment Roundtable, where discussions focused on global business opportunities and Connecticut's strategic advantages.
During the visit to Mumbai, the delegation interacted with industry leaders and US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) members, highlighting Connecticut's business-friendly policies and investment opportunities. The delegation also met with Mike Hankey, the U.S. Consul General in Mumbai, to discuss strengthening U.S.-India commercial ties at the state and local levels.
The mission underscored the significant socio-economic ties between Connecticut and India. Indians constitute the second-largest foreign-born population in Connecticut, with approximately 38,000 residents. Additionally, around 7,200 Indian students were studying in Connecticut, making India the top country of origin for international students in the state.
Organized by AdvanceCT, a nonprofit economic development organization focused on business attraction and expansion, the Connecticut mission sought to deepen trade relations, attract new investments, and enhance academic collaborations.
The delegation included senior leaders such as Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Daniel O’Keefe, University of Connecticut president Radenka Maric, Yale University vice provost for research Michael Crair, and Connecticut innovations CEO Matthew McCooe.
