Acclaimed made in India crime thriller Santosh has added another feather to its cap with a British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director, or producer.
Written and directed by Indian -origin filmmaker Sandhya Suri, the film has already garnered international recognition, including a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film.
Commenting on the BAFTA nomination, Suri said, “This is a wonderful honour. Making Santosh has been a long journey, a good decade of plodding, researching, refining, and getting ready to make what is quite an ambitious fiction debut in the middle of India, prepping in the peak of summer.”
“The entire team was so deeply committed, they really eased the path for me. After a great reception at Cannes, it means a lot to bring Santosh home and have this recognition in the UK. I really hope this nod from BAFTA will help drive audiences to come out and see the film when it is released here [UK] in March.”
Starring Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, the film follows Santosh, a young widow who inherits her late husband's police job in rural India. Under the mentorship of Sharma, a seasoned female inspector, she dives into the investigation of a brutal murder, exposing her to the stark realities of crime, corruption, and her own identity in a fractured system.
The film has received universal acclaim, achieving a flawless 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently showing in select cinemas in New York and Los Angeles, Santosh is set to expand to additional U.S. cities on January 31. However, its release in India remains uncertain as it awaits certification clearance from the country’s censor board.
