Cult classic Indian film Tumbbad is set to make its North American theatrical debut Nov. 14, thrilling fans with news of an upcoming sequel.
Following a highly successful re-release in India in September, which grossed US$ 4.56 million (INR 380 million) at the box office, the film will now screen in over 200 theaters across the United States and Canada, with a UK release to follow on Nov. 15.
The film, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and co-directed by Adesh Prasad, stars Sohum Shah as Vinayak Rao, a villager in the cursed town of Tumbbad. His greed-driven pursuit of the demon Hastar's treasure forms the backbone of this horror-fantasy, which has gained a global following since its initial release in 2018.
Tumbbad made history as the first Indian film to be showcased in the Critics’ Week section at the Venice International Film Festival, drawing international attention for its unique blend of folklore and horror.
“We designed it as a theatrical experience, from the cinematography to the VFX and scale, to immerse audiences so deeply that they forget it isn’t actually raining,” said Sohum Shah, who also produced the film.
The movie has garnered numerous accolades, including eight nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards, where it won Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Design. With its gripping narrative, stunning visuals, and standout performances from Shah, Jyoti Malshe, and Anita Date-Kelkar, Tumbbad continues to captivate audiences.
Excitement is also mounting around Tumbbad 2, which Shah confirmed is slated to begin production in 2025. “The script is ready—it took us six years to perfect it,” Shah told Variety, expressing enthusiasm for expanding the Tumbbad universe. Adesh Prasad will direct the sequel, while original director Rahi Anil Barve is currently focused on a separate Netflix project.
