Dairy Council of California honors Smriti Mehta with leadership award

Mehta is among five recipients of the award and is currently a junior at Amador Valley High School.

Northern California high school student Smriti Mehta has been honored with the 2025 Let’s Eat Healthy Leadership Award by the Dairy Council of California, a nonprofit organization funded by California’s dairy farm families and local milk processors, which operates under the guidance of the California Department of Food and Agriculture to provide free, science-based nutrition education. 

Motivated by her father’s type 2 diabetes diagnosis, Mehta has dedicated herself to making nutrition science accessible to teenagers. The award, recognizes her contributions to nutrition education and advocacy.

Mehta is the author of Ella Eats: Discovering Healthy Choices, a children’s book that has reached hundreds of students. She also runs BiteBalanced, a blog simplifying nutrition concepts for young readers. 

Expanding her impact globally, Mehta has addressed children in India on integrating traditional cuisine into a balanced diet. She also collaborates with university researchers to launch a podcast using insights from the Dairy Council of California to debunk nutrition myths.

Beyond writing and advocacy, Mehta plays a significant role in policy reform. As a policy intern at Harvard STRIPED, a public health incubator, she is actively working to pass legislation in California prohibiting the sale of over-the-counter diet pills and muscle-building supplements to minors. 

She also serves as a youth advisor for the Dairy Council of California and contributes to the Pleasanton Unified School District’s Nutrition Committee, where she successfully implemented overnight oats as a nutritious breakfast for over 2,000 students.

Her accomplishments include delivering a TEDx talk on nutrition education, winning an Ideathon for designing a nutrition app, and earning honors in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. She also co-hosts a nutrition podcast at Georgetown University and speaks at conferences such as Food as Medicine Global, LLC, advocating for healthier lifestyles.
